 Oman Seekers Come to the Manger We know that the Father is actively at work in Oman, to begin drawing people to His Son, Jesus. Researchers estimate that approximately 2.5% of any given population are open for religious change. So in the nation of Oman, that means approximately 116,110 people are potentially open! ‘Broad sowing’ initiatives are challenging in Oman, because of laws outlawing proselytization. However, social media campaigns are starting to connect with seekers and beginning to bear fruit. Today, let’s pray for seekers in Oman, and the social media efforts to reach them. Especially during this Christmas season, may many Omanis be drawn to Emanuel, God With Us!

 Ash-Sharqiyah South Region From the Rising of the Sun Ash-Sharqiyah South region (pop. 315,445) was formed in 2011, when Ash-Sharqiyah region was divided into North and South. It is in the northeast corner of the country, and the easternmost point of the entire Arab word. The regional capital, Sur, was once a major center for maritime international trade with East Africa and South Asia. The beaches in this region are famous for their beauty and wildlife—the nesting sea turtles, majestic humpback whales, white-sand beaches, and good surfing. Besides beautiful coastlines, this region is also home to Sharqiyah Sands, which are famous for desert camping and dune-bashing. This is the land of the rising sun; Ash-Sharqiyah means 'eastern' in Arabic, and the Arabic word for sunrise comes from the same root. Let's declare His praise over this land! Let the name of the Lord be praised, both now and forevermore. From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised. (Psalm 113:2-3)

There are a diversity of peoples here, from Swahili-speaking sailors to Bedouin tribes still living in tents in the desert sands. Declare this over Ash-Sharqiyah South: “'For from the rising of the sun to its setting, My Name will be great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to My Name, and a pure offering.  Ash-Sharqiyah North Region A Hidden Gem Ash-Sharqiyah North is in the northeast corner of the country, and is the gateway between the rugged interior and the eastern coastal plains. There are many ancient ruins in the area that tell of its historical significance, such as the remains of a copper mine dating to 3200 BC, evidence of past wealth in the mud-brick village of Al Munisifeh, and the "Qiblatain" mosque dating from the time of Mohammed with two qiblas (prayer directions), one pointing towards Jerusalem and the other added later, pointing towards Mecca. The regional capital, Ibra was once a prosperous trading post, and still boasts a vibrant suuq, with a women's market on Wednesdays. The city is also known for its equestrian skills and shows. The Arabic root of Ibra can be translated "remission of debt;” may this city and region come to know the true canceling of their spiritual debt in Christ Jesus! “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38

 Movements in Oman Rapid Multiplication of Disciples and Churches Throughout the Country We want to see the fullness of the Kingdom of God coming into every part of Oman, like yeast penetrating the entire batch of dough (Matt. 13:33). And the fastest way for this to happen is by rapidly reproducing disciples and groups (churches), who spread and multiply within and across their families, tribes, social networks, and societies. Acts 6:7 is our heart’s desire and fervent prayer: “God's word reigned supreme and kept spreading. The number of Jesus' followers in [Oman] quickly grew and increased by the day.” Let’s pray for the church that is forming in Oman:

 Musandam Region Top of the Mountains Musandam (Arabic: مُـسَـنْـدَم, population: 49,062) is the northernmost governorate in Oman, an enclave (2, actually) separated from the rest of the country by the United Arab Emirates. It is a peninsula which sits strategically at the Strait of Hormuz, a mere 21 miles from Iran. Called the 'Norway of Arabia' because of its dramatic fjords, the region is geographically isolated by rugged mountains, and its inhabitants have traditionally been hostile to outsiders. Although growing in tourism, it is still one of the most remote and isolated places in the country. This region is also home to two unique ethnic groups, the Kumzari and the Shehi. In Arabic ‘Musandam’ means ‘anvil,’ perhaps referring to its shape. This area is known locally as ‘Ru’us Al Jibal’ (Arabic: رُؤُوْس ٱلْجِبَال), meaning head or top of the mountains, indicating its position at the top of the Hijar Mountains that stretch across northern Oman. “For the Eternal is a great God, and a great King, supreme over all gods. Within His control are the very depths of the earth; the mountaintops too—they all belong to Him.  Peoples of Musandam The Shehi and the Kumzari Musandam is home to two distinct ethno-linguistic groups. The Shehi/Shihuh people are believed by some to be the original inhabitants of Oman, who were driven north to their current area by Arab Bedouin tribes coming from the south. They speak a dialect of Arabic that by some accounts is "unintelligible" to outsiders. They are also known for their unique architectural structures, such as houses built into mountain caves, and 'bait al qifl' (lock house), bunker-like storage rooms used for securing their valuables during seasonal migrations to the coast. The Shehi people also use an axe called a ‘jerz’ in Arabic, rather than the traditional ‘khanjar’ dagger. The Kumzari people are at the tip of the Musandam peninsula, and accessible only by boat. Their origins are unclear; they may be of Iranian and/or Arab descent. They speak a hybrid of more than 45 languages, including Arabic, Farsi, Urdu, English, and Portuguese. It is thought that shipwrecked sailors over the centuries contributed to the linguistic melting pot, but now the language is on the verge of extinction. There are approximately 4500 speakers of Kumzari today. The Kumzari are traditionally fishermen, and known for their bravery in combat.  Dhofar Region Rains of Refreshing Dhofar (Arabic: ظُفَّار, pop. 416,458) is the southernmost governorate in Oman, bordering Yemen. The name Dhofar comes from the Arabic root meaning nail or claw, but also victory and success. The capital, Salalah, is Oman's 2nd largest city, and traditionally had been the home of the Sultan until modern days. Dhofar is also home to the frankincense tree, whose sap is harvested and dried into crystals to be burned as incense. It was once under the biblical Kingdom of Sheba, part of the ancient, lucrative Frankincense Trail. The region is geographically isolated from the rest of Oman, and has at times tried to gain its independence. It also is home to various languages and people groups, including Jebali (mountain people), Mahri, Bathari, and Hobyot. The region is blessed by cooling summer rains ('khareef') and hundreds of thousands of tourists descend on the area to find relief from the searing Gulf heat. “You heavens above, rain down My righteousness; let the clouds shower it down.  People Groups of Dhofar The Jibbali/Shahri, Mahra, Hobyot, and Batahira The Jibbali or Shahri people inhabit the mountains of Dhofar and number approximately 50,000. 'Jibbali' is the Arabic descriptor of the people ('of the mountain'), while 'Shahri' has the same meaning ('of the mountain') in their own language. Samples of the Shahri language can be found here. There are approximately 25,000 speakers of Jibbali/Shahri. Also known as the Al Qara tribes, these peoples are traditionally nomadic herders of cattle and camels, seasonally migrating between the plains and the mountains. Some sources delineate the Al-Shahra tribes as a subset of the Jibbali, and perhaps were the original inhabitants of the mountains before the Al-Qara tribes immigrated from Yemen 500-700 years ago. The Mahra are found in both Yemen and Oman, and have a long history in the region, including their own Sultanate. There are approximately 95,000 Mahra in Oman. They are nomadic camel herders in the desert north of the Dhofar mountains, and famous throughout the Arab world for their prized camels. Mehri is the most widely spoken of the South Arabian languages. You can find a prayer guide for the Mahra people here. The Hobyot are a people group straddling the mountainous border of Oman and Yemen. Estimates range on their population, somewhere between a couple hundred and a thousand. Their language is also closely related to Mahri, but distinct. They are pastoral and semi-nomadic. The Batahira are a small tribal group of about 200, with less than 20 remaining speakers of Bathari. Their language is also closely related to Mahri. They are found in a rugged coastal area about 300 km northeast of Salalah, and traditionally were fisherman, especially known for catching shark and turtles. They were the lowest of status in the traditional Dhofari tribal structure, with very harsh living conditions. Since 1970, they have rapidly integrated into Omani society and become more 'Arabized'.  Ripe Fields Praying for the Harvest in Oman “As you look around right now, wouldn’t you say that in about four months it will be time to harvest? Well, I’m telling you to open your eyes and take a good look at what’s right in front of you. These [Omani] fields are ripe. It’s harvest time!” (John 4:35–MSG) Oman has had a growing number of Kingdom Workers over the years, but there are still many key cities (and even whole regions) without a known intentional Gospel witness. Let’s pray to the Lord of the Harvest, to open doors into Oman and keep them open, to thrust out and retain laborers, and to reap much fruit!
