 August Focus: Ash-Sharqiyah South Region From the Rising of the Sun Ash-Sharqiyah South region (pop. 315,445) was formed in 2011, when Ash-Sharqiyah region was divided into North and South. It is in the northeast corner of the country, and the easternmost point of the entire Arab word. The regional capital, Sur, was once a major center for maritime international trade with East Africa and South Asia. The beaches in this region are famous for their beauty and wildlife—the nesting sea turtles, majestic humpback whales, white-sand beaches, and good surfing. Besides beautiful coastlines, this region is also home to Sharqiyah Sands, which are famous for desert camping and dune-bashing. This is the land of the rising sun; Ash-Sharqiyah means 'eastern' in Arabic, and the Arabic word for sunrise comes from the same root. Let's declare His praise over this land! Let the name of the Lord be praised, both now and forevermore. From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised. (Psalm 113:2-3)

Ash-Sharqiyah South has 5 districts: Sur (the regional capital), Al Kamil w’al-Wafi, Jalan Bani Bu Ali, Jalan Bani Bu Hassan, and Masirah (a large island off the coast). There are a diversity of peoples here, from Swahili-speaking sailors to Bedouin tribes still living in tents in the desert sands. Declare this over Ash-Sharqiyah South: “'For from the rising of the sun to its setting, My Name will be great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to My Name, and a pure offering. For My Name will be great among the nations,' says the Lord of Hosts." (Malachi 1:11)

 Sur Sailors and Ships Sur (Arabic: صُوْر, pop. 83,763) is the capital and largest city of Ash-Sharqiyah South Governorate, and seat of the Sur district (pop. 110,9750). It sits on a sheltered harbor near the easternmost tip of Oman (and of the entire Arabian Peninsula). Historically, the city is known for being an important destination point for sailors. Today, the sea still plays an important part of life and culture in Sur. Long an important trading center with East Africa and India, Sur was also the center of the Omani slave trade. Like other coastal towns, it was under Portuguese rule in the 16th century. Sur’s importance declined when the British outlawed slavery in the mid-19th century, and the city’s economy was further ruined by the opening of the Suez Canal, which saw it lose trade with India.  Seafaring Legacy, Part 1 At Home on the Seas Oman's location at the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, at the mouth of the Arabian Gulf, and at the crossroads of Asia and Africa on the Indian Ocean has given it a valuable strategic position for maritime exploration and trade. With its extensive coastline and many natural harbors, Omanis have been skillfully sailing the seas for over 3000 years. In the Bronze Age, Omanis ruled the waters of the Arab Gulf, trading with Mesopotamia. In the south, they also took part in the frankincense trade, helping bring the precious incense to other parts of the Middle East, and across the sea to India. In the Islamic Age, Oman's sea power grew as explorers traveled further abroad, into southeast Asia and even into China. The port city of Sohar rose in wealth and influence, and by the 10th century AD, it was thought to be the richest city in the Muslim world. Although for a time Oman's coastal area was subjected to colonial rule by the Portuguese in the 1500s, by 1650 Oman's naval fleet managed to expel the colonizers not just from Oman, but from the waters of the Gulf and along the coast of Africa. The 18th and 19th century was the height of Oman's naval power and empire. Muscat and Sur rose in influence and prosperity. The Sultan held coastal territory along east Africa, India, Pakistan, Persia, and the Arabian Gulf. Besides the trade of exotic goods and spices, Oman also controlled the East African slave trade, based in Zanzibar. Oman's Al-Sultanah ship brought the first Arab envoy to New York in 1840, opening trade and ties with the US. Oman's naval power waned as it came under British influence in the late 1800s, and the slave trade ceased. However, Oman still remains a maritime shipping power with its co-control of the Strait of Hormuz, and modern industrial ports in Sohar, Duqm, and Salalah that import and export key resources for the greater region. "Some went off to sea in ships, plying the trade routes of the world. They, too, observed the Lord’s power in action, His impressive works on the deepest seas. He spoke, and the winds rose, stirring up the waves. Their ships were tossed to the heavens and plunged again to the depths; the sailors cringed in terror. They reeled and staggered like drunkards, and were at their wits’ end. “Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress. He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves. What a blessing was that stillness as He brought them safely into harbor!" (Psalm 107:23-30)

 Seafaring Legacy, Part 2 Shipbuilding and the Spread of Islam Omani 'dhows,' traditional wooden boats, are still built by hand, which can be seen in the shipyards of Sur. The word ‘dhow’ actually comes from Swahili, reflecting the extent of Oman's naval empire. Traditionally, they are constructed of teak and cedar (from India) and the wood is sealed with shark liver oil. The planks are stitched together by coconut fiber rope, rather than nailed-approximately 150,000 rope stitches per boat! Rarely are there blueprints, as design knowledge is memorized and passed down. It usually takes about 6 months to complete the construction of one boat. Sailors and merchants from Oman fanned out across the Indian ocean, taking advantage of monsoon winds to go along the coasts of Africa, India, Southeast Asia, and even to China. They also traveled up the Persian Gulf, and up the Red Sea. And as they traveled, they brought Islam with them. Omani sailors were key in spreading Islam beyond the Arab world into South, Southeast, and East Asia. May Omanis one day be sent out to carry the true Good News to the nations! Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!” But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!” Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped. Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed. (Matt. 14:24-33)

 Al-Kamil Wal-Wafi Complete and Adequate Al Kamil Wal-Wafi (Arabic: الكامل والوافي, pop. 30,853) is a town and seat of Al Kamil Wal-Wafi District (pop. 38,456) in the Ash-Sharqiyah South Region. This area sits between the mountains and the sand desert, with beautiful wadis and sand dunes. The Bedouin here are famous for their horses and camels, breeding and racing prized animals. Local handicrafts include textiles and silverwork such as swords and khanjars (daggers). In Arabic, Al Kamil wal-Wafi literally means “complete and adequate.” We bless the people of Al Kamil Wal-Wafi to be made complete in Jesus! So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority. Praise the Lord! We are made complete in Him! Yes, you and I are made complete in Christ!  Slavery in Oman, Part 1 Historical Roots There is a long history of slavery in Oman, (since the 6th century AD), as it was one of the primary slave-trading nations long before and after the Europeans and Americans. Several slave trade routes have been noted. The most significant one trafficked enslaved people from the Swahili coast of East Africa via Zanzibar to Oman. From Oman, the slaves were then exported to the Arabian Peninsula and Persia. A second route trafficked Africans through Jeddah and across land to Oman. A third, later route trafficked Baluch from Pakistan into the Gulf. For the most part, historic slavery in Oman and the Gulf was confined to the domestic sphere (house slaves, concubines), and sometimes the men were used for dangerous work such as pearl diving. Coming under British influence in the 1800s, Oman’s slave trade waned, but slavery and all restrictions upon enslaved people were only finally outlawed in 1970. When Sultan Qaboos ascended to power at that time, all former slaves were given full rights as Omani citizens, and took on the tribal name of their former owners. Today, Oman appears racially integrated, with all shades of skin color seeming to get along. Much of Omani traditional music and dance came into the culture through slavery, and is celebrated with pride. But prejudice lingers under the surface, especially when it comes to interracial marriage. The topic of slavery is taboo, even though its influence is pervasive. Let us pray this adapted prayer for Oman: God of Justice, in Your wisdom You create all people in your image, without exception. Through Your goodness, open Omanis’ eyes to see the dignity, beauty, and worth of every human being.  Slavery in Oman, Part 2 Modern-Day Forced Labor Unfortunately, forms of modern slavery exist in Oman. Migrant laborers, both men and women, can be exploited, overworked for little or no salary, without the freedom to leave. These are primarily domestic workers (maids and nannies), and construction and farm workers. However, even higher level employees can face abusive working conditions. Workers, primarily from Africa and Asia, might be promised rosy jobs by deceptive recruiters, and arrive to find very different living and working conditions. Their passports may be withheld, and they may be forced to repay the airline tickets and visa fees that should legally be covered by the employer. They may be forced to labor outside in the sizzling heat, or work 16 hours a day, 7 days a week. Salaries are set by nationality, so an Indian maid would be paid a fraction of a Filipino maid. And because of the sponsorship system, a worker is legally tied to their employer, and unable to change jobs or leave without their sponsor's permission, even under abusive circumstances. Thankfully, the Omani government is doing more to stop illegal trafficking and abusive labor practices, and has been making changes in the sponsorship system. But much still needs to be done, including cultural shifts in mindset and values.  Minority Religions, Part 1 Religious Tolerance While Oman is an Islamic nation and governed by Shari’a law, there are certain permissions and protections for foreigners to practice other religious faiths. According to Omani law, there should not be discrimination based on one's religion, and there is the freedom to practice non-Muslim religion, so far as it is not disturbing public order. Certain religions (Christianity, Hinduism) have been granted land and buildings by the government, and congregations are likewise monitored by the government. Religious gatherings in other places (homes, etc.) are prohibited, and all religious organizations must be registered with the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs (MERA). All imported religious materials must also be approved by the Ministry. Proselytizing is not explicitly prohibited under Omani law, however it is generally frowned upon if seen as harassment, and the MERA will actively stop or expel individuals or groups that are deemed disruptive or disrespectful. Apostasy is also not a criminal offense; however if an Omani father converts to another faith, he will lose paternal rights over his children. The Omani government does not specifically track religious demographics. However, 2020 statistics from the CIA World Factbook show that of citizens and residents in Oman, approximately 86% are Muslim, 6.5% Christian, 5.5% Hindu, and 2% Other, including Sikh, Jain, Buddhist and Jewish. “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” (2 Cor. 3:17a)

 Minority Religions, Part 2 Christianity There are an estimated 300,000 (expatriate) Christians in Oman, and 90 or so Christian congregations meeting on 4 church compounds in Muscat (Ruwi and Ghala), Sohar, and Salalah. Protestant, Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox groups share the compounds. There are 3 Orthodox congregations in Muscat: Greek Orthodox, Jacobite Syrian Orthodox, and Malankara Orthodox (from Kerala, India). The Catholic Church has four parishes with seven priests: St Anthony of Padua in Sohar, Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Ruwi, Holy Spirit in Muscat, and St Francis Xavier in Salalah. There are approximately 80 Protestant congregations, primarily divided along ethnolinguistic lines. The Protestant Church in Oman (PCO) is a partnership of the Anglican Church and the Reformed Church of America (the original Protestant missions in Oman in the late 1800s-early 1900s), and it also oversees the dozens of smaller Protestant congregations.  Minority Religions, Part 3 Christian History in Oman There is some Biblical history in Oman, although not totally verified. Job's tomb is located north of Salalah. Sheba (and its queen) were located in Southern Arabia (Yemen/Southern Oman), and King Solomon allegedly designed Oman's falaj system. And frankincense and myrrh from the south of Oman were also used in Temple worship and gifted to baby Jesus. The Apostle Thomas is said to have first brought the Gospel to Oman, stopping on his way to India. Soon after there was a church in Sohar (whose ancient name was Mazun), called the Beit Mazunayeh, and the bishop from Sohar attended church councils in 424, 544, 576 & 676 AD. However, it seems that after Islam was accepted in Oman, the church largely disappeared. Christianity officially re-entered Oman with the Portuguese in the 1500s. A Catholic church and Augustinian monastery were built in Muscat, but the buildings were eventually converted to other use when the colonizers were expelled in 1650. Unfortunately, the Portuguese were known for their harsh oppression and Christianity was not well-received. The first Protestant missionaries came to Oman in the 1890s. The Anglican bishop Thomas Valpy French arrived in Muscat in 1891 but died soon after. He is buried at a small Christian cemetery in a rocky cove near Muttrah. In 1893, Peter Zwemer (brother of Samuel, one of the founders of the Arabian Mission) came to Muscat and further established the work. In the following decades, education and medicine were their primary contributions, although there was a small Omani church. With the discovery of oil and Sultan Qaboos's development of the nation, the mission schools and hospitals came under the government in the 1970s and the Omani church largely dissipated. 阿曼的基督教歷史

 Minority Religions, Part 4 Hinduism Oman is unique in that it is the only country in the Arab world with an indigenous Hindu population-approximately 1000 Indians who are naturalized Omani citizens from generations back. Currently, there are an estimated 260,000 Hindus in Oman, the vast majority being expatriate workers. There are two Hindu temples in Muscat (the 125-year-old Shri Shiva Temple is pictured here) and a Hindu crematorium in Sohar. It is thought that Hinduism first came to Oman in 1507 when Banyans (Kutchi-speaking Hindus) arrived in Muscat from the Kutch region of Western India. They worked primarily as merchants, and many became quite wealthy. By the early 1800s, there were at least 4,000 Hindus in Oman. In 1895, the Hindu colony in Muscat came under attack by the Ibadhis and by 1900, the number of Hindus had decreased to 300. It is thought that only a few dozen Hindus remained in Oman when Sultan Qaboos came to power in 1970. The historical Hindu Quarters of al-Waljat and al-Banyan in Muscat are no longer occupied by native Hindus. “And everyone knows how wonderfully you turned to God from idols to serve the true and living God. And now you eagerly expect his Son from heaven—Jesus, the deliverer, whom he raised from the dead and who rescues us from the coming wrath.” (I Thess. 1:9-10)

印度教

 Minority Religions, Part 5 Judaism There has long been a historical Jewish presence in the Arabian Peninsula, including Oman. Although there aren't any traditional Jewish communities left, there are still some practicing Jews from other nations living and working in Oman. One source estimated there were currently about 20 expatriate Jews in the Sultanate, and the Association of Gulf Jewish Communities was recently formed to give care and oversight to the Jews living throughout the AP. It is expected that the Jewish population may increase, given the 2020 Abraham Accords and possibility of greater political/economic ties with Israel. History: According to Bertram Thomas (British explorer), Jews were living west of Sohar during the initial period of Islam, one of whom met Amr bin Al-As, the Prophet’s representative to Oman in 630 AD. Later, there was a vibrant Jewish community recorded in 9th-century Sohar. Ishaq bin Yahuda was a Jewish merchant who sailed to China in 882 AD with 200 dinars. He returned 30 years later, having made a great fortune of over 3 million dinars. His Sohari neighbors fervently defended him from an international plot involving the Abbasid caliph to steal his ship and his wealth, narrowly escaping an international trade fiasco. About 200 years later, around 1170 AD, Rabbi Benjamin of Tudela, Spain visited Oman and noted a Jewish community in Muscat. In the mid-1800s, a British army officer further documented a Jewish community in Muscat, apparently recent immigrants fleeing severe persecution in Iraq. The community was well-received and tolerated in Oman, and worked primarily as silversmiths, bankers, and liquor sellers. The officer also noted a community of about 20 families in Sohar, with a synagogue. In 1948 there was a recorded Jewish population of 5,000. These mostly lived in Muscat and a few hundred in Ibri (some think the name Ibri may be related to the Arabic word for 'Hebrew'). This Jewish population decreased during the early 1950s, when they left the Arabian Peninsula en-masse and relocated to the newly-formed state of Israel. An interesting side note, Thomas observed that a “small, square, shallow burned brick is a feature of Sohar architecture; it is found nowhere else in the Batinah, nor is it any more made here, its manufacture being popularly ascribed to Jews.” Today the fort in Sohar has those bricks, but they also are found near the town center in the Jewish cemetery, which contains about 100 graves, some with Hebrew inscriptions. “So, am I saying that Israel stumbled so badly that they will never get back up? Certainly not! Rather, it was because of their stumble that salvation now extends to all the non-Jewish people, in order to make Israel jealous and desire the very things that God has freely given them. So if all the world is being greatly enriched through their failure, and through their fall great spiritual wealth is given to the non-Jewish people, imagine how much more will Israel’s awakening bring to us all!” Romans 11:11-12, TPT)

 Omani Khanjars, Part 1 Weapons of Prestige The Omani khanjar, or dagger, is nearly synonymous with Oman itself. It is the centerpiece of the national emblem, and worn by every male Omani on ceremonial or official occasions. The curved daggers have been used for centuries, and although the design originated in Oman, they have spread throughout the Middle East, South Asia and through the Ottoman Empire even into the Balkans. Although purely ceremonial now, in the past khanjars were carried regularly for self-defense, offensive attack (and reportedly used to aid in scaling fortress walls), and for manual work such as slaughtering animals. A man's khanjar was also a sign of his status, manhood, and valor, and it was considered rude to receive a guest into one's home if not wearing it. Today it is also considered taboo to unsheathe the dagger and not use it ('blood it'); thus khanjars are to be respected and are certainly not to be played with. Declare This: God’s word is alive and working and is sharper than a double-edged sword. It cuts all the way into us, where the soul and the spirit are joined, to the center of our joints and bones.
