 Quriyat Villages and Natural Beauty Quriyat (Arabic: قريات, pop. 31,325) is a town and seat of Quriyat district (pop. 58,438), part of the larger Muscat region. Historically it was a significant port city and was occupied by the Portuguese in the 1600s. Today this area is known for its natural attractions, including the Bimmah Sink Hole (pictured), Wadi Al-Arbi’een, Wadi Dayqah Dam, Jebel Aswad (Black Mountain, so named for its distinctive colouring), Majlis Al-Jinn cave complex (the 2nd largest in the world), and pristine beaches rich in marine life. The town of Quriyat has the dubious distinction of holding the world’s record for the warmest ‘low’ temperature: 109 F/42.6 C on June 28, 2018. In Arabic, ‘Quriyat’ is related to the word for ‘villages’. “Whatever village or town you enter, search for an honourable man who will let you into his home until you leave for the next town. Once you enter a house, speak to the family there and say, 'God's blessing of peace be upon this house!  Tribes and Tongues, Part 1 The Lawatiyah The Lawatiyah are the largest Shi'ite group in Oman, practicing Twelver/Jaafari Shi'ism, although there are some Isma'ili roots in the community as well. They are also known as 'Khojas' or 'Hyderabadis', and came from India around 300-400 years ago. Estimates place their numbers between 20,000-30,000. They thrived in commerce, and have held significant positions in government. They traditionally have lived in Muttrah, in a closed enclave on the Corniche, but there are also small communities along the Batinah Coast. They speak a language related to Sindhi, with approximately 5,000-10,000 speakers. God, we pray for the Lawatiyah people in Oman, that they would:

 Tribes and Tongues, Part 2 The Baloch and the Zadjali The Baloch originally come from the coastal regions around the Iran/Pakistan border including the area of Gwadar, which belonged to Oman until 1958. They make up an estimated 15-30% of Omani citizens. They are Sunni, and have their own language (with an estimated 220,000 speakers in Oman). They originally served in the armed forces, and continue to have a heavy presence in the military and the police. The Zadjali are often grouped together with the Baluch, although this small community from the Iran/Pakistan border area has its own distinct language. The language is a mixture of Balochi, Sindi and Persian. Estimated number of speakers range from a few hundred, to 5% of Muttrah, Muscat (several thousand, where they are primarily located). Islamic New Year Happy 1445! Today in Oman is the observed public holiday of Islamic New Year (Arabic: رأس السنة الهجرية, Raʿs as-Sanah al-Hijrīyah), although the calendar officially turned yesterday. The Islamic New Year is also called the Hijri New Year, because on this date in 622 AD Muhammed and his followers emigrated from Mecca to Medina, known in Arabic as the Hijrah. The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, and is 12 days shorter than the Gregorian solar calendar. Thus, all Islamic months/holidays rotate around the year. All religious duties, such as prayer, fasting in the month of Ramadan, the Hajj pilgrimage, and the dates of significant events, such as celebration of holy nights and festivals, are calculated according to the Islamic calendar and based on the sighting of the new moon. And the One sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” And then he said to me, “Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.” (Rev. 21:5) On this New Year’s Day, let us bless the people of Oman to know that One who makes all things new!  Tribes and Tongues, Part 3 The Baharinah and Farsi The Baharinah are Arab Shi'a related to those in Bahrain and Eastern Arabia, with their own variety of Arabic distinct from Gulf Arabic, and interspersed with Persian, Hindi, Turkish, and English loan words. Although probably not more than a few hundred people in Oman, they are nevertheless quite prominent, with several members in government and the Diwan of the Royal Court. The Farsi/'Ajami are Persians with a long history of living in Oman, as this area has been under Persian rule at different times in history. Primarily traders and craftsmen, in recent centuries the Persians were known as weavers and coppersmiths. 'Al 'Ajam' means 'non-Arab', and was primarily used to refer to Shi'a Persians in Oman. The Ajami language is a dialect of Persian; however it is unclear if it is spoken in Oman or not. God, we pray for the Baharinah and Farsi peoples in Oman, that they would:

 Tribes and Tongues, Part 4 Swahili Speakers There is a long relationship between East Africa and Oman, dating back to 700 AD when Omani rulers fled Ummayad attacks and found refuge in Africa. At various times in history Oman has ruled over large swathes of coastal East Africa, even establishing Zanzibar as its imperial capital in the early 1800s. Swahili speakers may be of 'pure' Arab ethnicity, or mixed Arab African. Many Swahili speakers immigrated from Zanzibar to Oman when Zanzibar gained independence in 1964. These Swahili speakers were more cosmopolitan in outlook and often fluent in English, thus securing high-ranking jobs in the oil industry and government, but also experiencing prejudice because of skin colour or lack of Arabic proficiency.  Muscat Seekers Come to Jesus We know that the Father is actively at work in Oman, to begin drawing people to His Son, Jesus. Researchers estimate that approximately 2.5% of any given population are open for religious change. So in Muscat region, that means approximately 32,561 people are potentially open! ‘Broad sowing’ initiatives are challenging in Oman, because of laws outlawing proselytization.  Hospitality, Part 1 A Warm Welcome Omanis are known for their generous hospitality, similar to other Arabs in the Gulf and throughout the Middle East. The roots of this go back to Bedouin culture, where travellers on long journeys across the harsh desert relied on being welcomed by strangers they encountered in order to survive. Traditionally, a guest of the Bedouin is to be offered unquestioned hospitality and protection for 3 days, with bountiful honour and generosity. Today, this permeates all Arab cultures, as Omanis and others are eager to host guests in their homes, serve lavish meals, and go out of their way to help a stranger in need. The Arabic welcome greeting of "ahlan wa sahlan" is derived from a longer phrase, حَـلَـلْـتَ أهلاً ونزَلتَ سهلاً which can be translated, "You have come to a people who are like kinsfolk/family, and descended to a place that is smooth/easy, (or not rugged, like a plain)." Another welcome greeting is 'marhaba', commonly replied to with 'marhabtain', or a 'double welcome'. The Omani hospitality ritual centres around coffee, dates, and/or halwa (Omani confection). 'Qahwa'-Omani coffee-is served in small 'finjaan' cups, large enough just for a drink or two. This reflects back to the rarity and preciousness of coffee in the past, which was typically only served to honoured guests. The coffee is lightly roasted, spiced, and unsweetened, and thus served with something sweet to complement it. It is typical for a guest to drink 1-3 cups, and to return the cup to the host with a shake, signifying no more. Omanis use 'coffee' as a verb: 'Have you been coffeed yet?' 'Daughter, coffee the guest.' etc.

 Hospitality, Part 2 Hospitality in the Bible Hospitality is a central theme of Scripture, in that God welcomes us into His family, and we are to welcome and receive Him into our lives. In the Old Testament, we see how Abraham serving his 3 guests (Genesis 18) is typical of traditional Bedouin/Middle Eastern hospitality. Other shocking Old Testament examples of Lot (Genesis 19) and the Ephraimite (Judges 19) show the extent that these cultures went to in order to protect a guest, even at the expense of sacrificing their own daughters. The story of Jael in Judges 4 is classic Bedouin hospitality, turned on its head. When the children of Israel arrive in the Promised Land, they are commanded to care for the stranger, because they were strangers in Egypt. In the New Testament, Jesus said that those who welcome the stranger, do so to Him. He condemned the stingy hospitality of a pharisee, and commended the women who washed His feet and poured out oil and perfume on them (Luke 7, John 12). Jesus Himself exemplified hospitality, washing the feet of His disciples and giving of Himself lavishly and generously (John 13). And in that vein, He promised that He goes to prepare a place for us, to welcome us to be with Him eternally (John 14). And Jesus Himself longs to receive our hospitality, to be invited into our own lives and commune with us there (Revelation 3). Because Arab/Omani culture is quite similar to the culture of the Bible, local friends here can offer unique insights into the Scriptures.  Muharram A Month Set Apart As mentioned a few days ago, this is the beginning of the new Islamic lunar year. The first month of the Islamic calendar is called ‘Muharram’ (Arabic: ٱلْمُحَرَّم). It is one of the four sacred months of the year when warfare is forbidden, and it is held to be the second holiest month after Ramadan. This month is often called ‘The Month of Allah’ and its name literally means ‘forbidden’ or ‘prohibited’, like ‘haram’ (foods or acts that are forbidden) or ‘harem’ (women that are forbidden to outsiders). In Oman, it is encouraged for people to pray and read the Quran more during this month, as well as have special days of fasting. Tomorrow, on Ashura, the 10th day of the month there is a special fast; fasting on the 9th and 11th days is also commended, as well as the 'white days’ of the month, when the moon is at its fullest. It is noted in one of the Hadith (sayings of Mohammed) that “the most virtuous fasting after the month of Ramadan is that of in the month of Muharram.” They are also encouraged to reflect upon the previous year, and consider Mohammed’s struggles and emulate his example. “So I will show My greatness and My holiness and make Myself known in the eyes of many nations. Then they will know that I am the LORD.” (Ezekiel 38:23) “Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy. All nations will come and worship You, for Your righteous acts have been revealed.” (Revelation 15:4) Let us pray for revelation of the true holiness of God to Omanis during this sacred time!  Ashura A Day of Fasting and Mourning Today is Ashura (Arabic: عَاشُورَاء), a special day in Islam for both Sunnis and Shi’ites. It occurs annually on the 10th of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. For Shia Muslims, Ashura is usually observed with large demonstrations of mourning, as it marks the death of Husayn ibn Ali (a grandson of Muhammad), who was beheaded during the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. Among Sunni Muslims, Ashura is observed through celebratory fasting, marking the day of salvation for Moses and the Israelites when they escaped from Egypt by miraculously crossing the Red Sea. In Oman, the Shi'a minority are allowed to celebrate, but in a relatively subdued manner. Shi’ite mosques hang black banners and fly black flags commemorating Husain’s death. In the Muttrah area of Muscat (with probably the largest concentration of Shi'ites in Oman), a procession does take place, but with less drama (and blood) than in other Shi’ite countries. One observer noted: As an outsider looking into the Muttrah events, my most notable observation was the variety of the ritual practices conducted by the different cultural groups. You see, It’s not just Omanis down here conducting a single procession. In true Omani fashion the larger group is mixed with Omanis, Pakistanis, Indians, and Iranians from all the Shia sects. Yet each subgroup recites the poems and chants slightly differently. The result is a haunting gathering memorial for Hussain bin Ali. "Then He broke through and transformed all my wailing into a whirling dance of ecstatic praise! He has torn the veil and lifted from me the sad heaviness of mourning. He wrapped me in the glory-garments of gladness. " (Psalm 30:11-12 TPT)

And the fastest way for this to happen is by rapidly reproducing disciples and groups (churches), who spread and multiply within and across their families, tribes, social networks, and societies. Acts 6:7 is our heart’s desire and fervent prayer: “God's word reigned supreme and kept spreading.  A Ninevah Prayer for Muscat Citywide Revival for Oman’s ‘Great City' As Muscat is Oman’s capital and ‘great city’, it is fitting to especially pray for this city’s spiritual awakening. May Muscat be like Nineveh, heeding the Word of the Lord and coming to repentance. Today’s prayer is based on intercession for the great cities of the world, found here. The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh: “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.” When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, He relented and did not bring on them the destruction He had threatened. (Jonah 3:5-10) Father, Nineveh proves that citywide awakening is possible. So Father, we intercede for the great Omani city of Muscat. I pray You will send to Muscat prophets and evangelists that are as effective as Jonah. Prepare Muscat to turn to You in repentance, fasting and seeking Your face. Father, spread the fame of Jesus throughout Oman and may the banner of Jesus be lifted above all in Muscat. May this city be the centre of righteousness for Oman. Lord, as a quarter of all Omanis live in the Muscat area, this gives the opportunity for revival to spread faster in this land. So set Muscat ablaze for You, in Jesus name.
